Facebook: Has it happened again? Senators in the US believe that Meta, formerly Facebook, has again violated user privacy. Representatives Mark Warner and Marco Rubio in the House claim that Facebook gave access to critical customer data to thousands of developers from Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia. Senators assert in an open letter to Mark Zuckerberg that they have seen papers that back up their assertions. User IDs, images, contact information, and private messages are listed among the kind of information disclosed in the letter.
The senators’ access to the documents was part of the litigation surrounding the Cambridge Analytica incident. In December 2022, Meta made a settlement agreement to pay $725 million to end the class-action lawsuit.
A spokesperson for Meta responded in a statement, saying that the locations and developers referred to in the documents the senators saw are from before 2014. They said that many years ago, we made substantive changes to our platform, shutting down developers’ access to key types of data on Facebook while reviewing and approving all apps that request access to sensitive information the statement reads.
